Orthokeratology lenses are customized gas permeable retainer lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the front surface of the eye (cornea) and temporarily correct myopia while you sleep. Upon waking, the contact lenses are removed, allowing you to experience clear, comfortable vision without the need for prescription glasses or contact lenses during the day. Ortho-k is often used to slow prescription change in pediatric patients; however, it is also a wonderfully safe, effective and reversible alternative to refractive surgery for adult patients.
Orthokeratology does not correct or prevent presbyopia: the normal aging process of the crystalline lens of the eye which causes blurred vision when reading or doing close work. Presbyopia usually occurs around age 40. If you have presbyopia or borderline presbyopia you will be given two options:
- Reading glasses when doing near work
OR - Monovision treatment where one eye is focused for distance and the other for reading. Monovision may cause you to give up some visual sharpness and depth perception. Most people find this a small compromise and enjoy their reduced dependence on reading glasses.
We will need to perform specialized testing to determine if you are a candidate. If interested in pursuing treatment, please call our office at 512-258-2120 to schedule a consultation. Your vision is our #1 priority – our entire staff is dedicated to answering your questions and helping you achieve your best results.
